Top Marlins News

  • Marlins' Matt Pushard: Returned to Miami

Pushard cleared waivers Wednesday and was returned to the Marlins, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

After being selected by the Cardinals in the Rule 5 Draft, Pushard allowed four earned runs over seven innings before being DFA'd by St. Louis on Sunday. The 28-year-old will now return to his previous organization after passing through waivers unclaimed, and he'll presumably fill in as bullpen depth at Triple-A Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Pete Fairbanks: Nails down seventh save

Fairbanks gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his seventh save of the season in a 4-1 win over the Nationals.

He also hit a batter with a pitch to make things interesting, but after the first two Washington hitters reached base to begin the frame, Fairbanks buckled down and escaped the jam. Over eight appearances since returning in mid-May from nerve irritation in his right hand, he's posted a 2.46 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB over 7.1 innings while collecting two wins and two saves in three chances.

  • Marlins' Max Meyer: Sharp in sixth win

Meyer (6-0) picked up the win Wednesday in a 4-1 victory over the Nationals, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out seven.

A fielder's choice and an Otto Lopez error in the fourth inning produced the only damage against Meyer in a dominant performance. The right-hander tossed 92 pitches (57 strikes) en route to his fourth quality start in his last seven outings, a stretch in which he's delivered a 2.47 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB over 43.2 innings. Meyer will look to keep rolling in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Diamondbacks.

  • Marlins' Anthony Bender: Snags fifth hold

Bender struck out one in a scoreless two-thirds of an inning Tuesday to record his fifth hold of the season in a win over the Nationals.

The right-hander picked up his first hold since April 28 as the Marlins continue to mix and match bullpen options behind closer Pete Fairbanks. Bender hasn't pitched poorly of late -- quite the opposite in fact, as he's posted a 1.46 ERA, 12:1 K:BB and microscopic 0.24 WHIP over 12.1 innings since the beginning of May. Without more consistent usage, however, Bender's fantasy appeal will remain very limited.

  • Marlins' Ryan Gusto: Limited workload in return

Gusto surrendered three runs on five hits over two innings of relief in Tuesday's win over the Nationals.

Called up from Triple-A Jacksonville earlier in the day, Gusto tossed 40 pitches (28 strikes) in what wound up being a bullpen day for the Marlins. The right-hander had been stretched out at Triple-A, lasting five-plus innings in five of his last seven outings for Jacksonville, but his usage Tuesday -- Gusto was the third pitcher into the game after Lake Bachar and John King -- suggests Miami may not view him as a viable rotation option, either working behind an opener or as a traditional starter. Until they're willing to promote top prospect Karson Milbrandt, however, the Marlins' staff will be awfully thin while Eury Perez (hamstring) and Janson Junk (shin) are on the shelf.

  • Marlins' John King: Credited with win Tuesday

King (2-1) picked up the win in Tuesday's 7-3 victory over the Nationals, tossing 1.2 perfect innings of relief. He didn't strike out a batter.

Lake Bachar got the start on a bullpen day for Miami and worked into the third inning before handing the ball to King, who needed just 26 pitches (14 strikes) to record his five outs. The southpaw wound up being credited with the win after Ryan Gusto, the pitcher who replaced him, coughed up three runs in two frames. King has been scored upon only once in his last seven appearances, posting a 2.25 ERA and 0.50 WHIP in eight innings over that stretch despite a lackluster 4:1 K:BB as he fills a flexible middle-relief role for the Marlins.

  • Marlins' Owen Caissie: Idle against left-hander

Caissie is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

Caissie will hit the bench along with fellow left-handed hitters Liam Hicks and Jakob Marsee while southpaw Andrew Alvarez starts for the Nationals. Heriberto Hernandez will pick up a start in the corner outfield in place of Caissie, who has produced a .321/.406/.536 slash line with one home run, 10 RBI and three runs over his last 10 games.

  • Marlins' Jakob Marsee: Resting against lefty

Marsee is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

Marsee will hit the bench along with fellow left-handed hitters Liam Hicks and Owen Caissie while southpaw Andrew Alvarez starts for the Nationals. Esteury Ruiz will cover center field in place of Marsee.

  • Marlins' Liam Hicks: Idle against southpaw

Hicks is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

Left-hander Andrew Alvarez is starting for the Nationals on Wednesday, so the Marlins will go with a right-handed-heavy lineup for the series finale. Hicks will hit the bench along with fellow left-handed hitters Owen Caissie and Jakob Marsee.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Fans three as Tuesday's opener

Bachar tossed 2.2 scoreless innings as Tuesday's opener against the Nationals. He struck out three batters and walked one without allowing a hit.

Bachar kicked off a bullpen day for the Marlins in what was the second major-league start of his career, and he answered the call by keeping the Nationals off the board. It was a nice bounce-back performance from his last outing Saturday against the Mets, when he gave up three runs on four hits across two innings. Bachar has a 3.45 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 35:11 K:BB across 31.1 innings this season.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Smacks solo homer Tuesday

Lopez went 2-for-5 with a solo home run during Miami's 7-3 win over Washington on Tuesday.

The Marlins hit three consecutive home runs off Miles Mikolas in the fifth inning, capped off by Lopez's solo shot, which was his fifth long ball of the season and first since May 5 against the Orioles. Over his last seven games, Lopez has gone 10-for-28 (.357) with two steals, three RBI and two extra-base hits.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Cracks first major-league homer

Mack went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI during the Marlins' 7-3 win over the Nationals on Tuesday.

Both teams failed to score through the first four innings of Tuesday's game, but Mack quickly changed that with a two-run homer off Miles Mikolas in the fifth inning, which was followed up by consecutive solo homers from Heriberto Hernandez and Otto Lopez. It was the first home run of Mack's major-league career, and he gave the Marlins an insurance run in the ninth with a sacrifice bunt that brought Liam Hicks home. Mack is slashing .214/.257/.300 with nine RBI, four extra-base hits and eight runs scored across 76 plate appearances since being called up from Triple-A Jacksonville in early May.

  • Marlins' Heriberto Hernandez: Goes deep twice vs. Washington

Hernandez went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI during the Marlins' 7-3 win over the Nationals on Tuesday.

The Marlins hit three straight home runs off Miles Mikolas in the fourth inning, with Hernandez's solo shot sandwiched between long balls by Joe Mack and Otto Lopez. Hernandez gave the Marlins insurance runs in the ninth with a two-run shot to left field, marking the first multi-homer game of his major-league career. He is now up to five home runs on the season, all of which have come in his last 11 games.

  • Marlins' Ryan Gusto: Called up to pitch Tuesday

The Marlins recalled Gusto from Triple-A Jacksonville to pitch Tuesday against the Nationals.

Lake Bachar is opening Tuesday's contest for Miami with Gusto poised to follow as the bulk reliever. The 27-year-old made his season debut for the Marlins in early April with a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, but he's primarily worked out of the rotation at Jacksonville and posted a 3.83 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 52:17 K:BB across 44.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Zach Brzykcy: Optioned to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned Brzykcy to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday.

He's being bumped from the roster in order to make room for Ryan Gusto. Brzykcy was with the Marlins for only one day and did not make an appearance.

  • Marlins' Josh Ekness: Facing six-week recovery timeline

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Monday that Ekness is expected to miss approximately six weeks due to a right calf strain, Kyle Sielaff of Marlins.tv reports.

After Ekness was spotted moving around in the Miami clubhouse with the aid of crutches following Sunday's loss to the Mets, the Marlins placed him on the 15-day injured list a day later. Ekness was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday but didn't make any relief appearances during his second stint of the season with the big club. Given the estimated six-week recovery timeline, Ekness will remain on the shelf through the All-Star break.
