  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Can't overcome rough first

Bello (2-6) took the loss Thursday against the Orioles, allowing eight runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four.

The Orioles got to Bello early and often Thursday, tagging the right-hander for six runs in the first inning, with nine of the first 10 batters reaching safely. Bello would eventually settle down and make it through five innings, but the Red Sox couldn't overcome the early deficit. Prior to his start Thursday, Bello made a pair of bulk-relief appearances where he allowed just two runs, both unearned, across 12 innings. Through 61 innings this year, Bello sports a 6.34 ERA with a 1.67 WHIP and 44:24 K:BB.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Shifted to 60-day injured list

The Red Sox transferred Story (abdomen) to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Story underwent surgery two weeks ago to repair a sports hernia. He had seemed to have a chance to make it back before missing 60-plus days, but now Story is ineligible for activation until after the All-Star break. Marcelo Mayer will continue to serve as Boston's primary shortstop while Story recovers.

  • Red Sox's Tyler Samaniego: Optioned to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Samaniego to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Samaniego has fared well with the Red Sox this season, posting a 2.66 ERA and 17:8 K:BB over 20.1 innings, but he's being sent out in order to clear a spot for the addition of Tommy Kahnle to the Boston bullpen. The left-handed Samaniego should get another chance with the big club later this summer.

  • Red Sox's Mickey Gasper: Stepping out of lineup

Gasper is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Orioles.

Gasper had started the previous three games and six of the last eight tilts, but he'll take a seat for Thursday's matinee. Carlos Narvaez is doing the catching for the Red Sox in the rubber match.

  • Red Sox's Tommy Kahnle: Added to roster

The Red Sox selected Kahnle's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Kahnle exercised an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract earlier this week, and the Red Sox have decided to add him to the big-league roster rather than let him reach free agency. The veteran reliever has collected a 1.40 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB in 19.1 innings at Worcester and will fill a middle-relief role in Boston.

  • Red Sox's Caleb Durbin: Keeps contributing

Durbin went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored in Wednesday's 8-1 win over Baltimore.

It's still in the small-sample-size zone, but Durbin appears to be emerging from a season-opening slump. Wednesday's double extended his streak of games with an extra-base hit to six, and the third baseman is 9-for-24 with seven RBI, one steal and three runs scored over that stretch. With Wednesday's production, Durbin raised his average to a season-high .193.

  • Red Sox's Willson Contreras: Sparks big inning Wednesday

Contreras went 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and a run scored in Wednesday's 8-1 win over the Orioles.

Contreras stretched a single into a double to lead off the fifth inning to spark a five-run rally and seal the win for the Red Sox, which entered the day just 9-20 at Fenway Park. He's been swinging a productive stick of late, going 23-for-56 (.411) with eight extra-base hits (three HR) and 10 RBI over the last 16 contests.

  • Red Sox's Mickey Gasper: Knocks first triple

Gasper went 1-for-4 with a walk, a triple, two RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 8-1 win over Baltimore.

Gasper took advantage of Orioles outfielder Blaze Alexander losing a ball in the twilight and reached third base for his first MLB triple and his first three-base hit at any level since 2022. He started at catcher for the fifth time in the last eight games and extended a hit streak to six consecutive contests. Gasper's been elevated to the primary backstop against right-handers and is 17-for-48 (.354) against them this season.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Drills seventh homer in win

Abreu went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Wednesday's 8-1 win over the Orioles.

Abreu's previous homer came during the May 8 win over the Rays, so Wednesday's long ball snapped a 20-game power drought. Additionally, the three RBI established a season high. Abreu is putting together a quality campaign as Boston's top right fielder, slashing .283/.345/.435 with seven home runs, 12 doubles, 28 RBI and four stolen bases across 256 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Payton Tolle: Six shutout innings in third win

Tolle (3-2) earned the win Wednesday against the Orioles, allowing no runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out five.

Tolle danced around plenty of pressure Wednesday, throwing just one clean inning on the evening, but he still managed to deliver his second scoreless start of the campaign. The 23-year-old left-hander is showing great improvement at keeping the ball in the yard this year, serving up just three home runs over 47.1 innings after giving up five across just 16.1 frames last regular season. Tolle will carry an impressive 2.28 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 51:13 K:BB into his next scheduled outing in Tampa Bay against the Rays.

  • Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Takes batting practice on field

Gonzalez (shoulder) took batting practice at Fenway Park on Wednesday, WEEI reports.

It's the first time Gonzalez has hit on the field since he underwent arthroscopic left shoulder surgery in March. Though the Red Sox have not divulged a target date for Gonzalez's rehab assignment, it seems one could be around the corner.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Starting rehab stint

Sandoval (biceps/elbow) will begin a rehab assignment this weekend, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

The left-hander made a pair of rehab appearances in April while working his back from the internal brace procedure he underwent on his elbow in 2024, but a biceps issue forced him to shut down his throwing program for a bit. Sandoval has since ramped things back up and has now been cleared for game action. The 29-year-old will likely require a handful of starts in the minors before gaining full clearance.

  • Red Sox's Anthony Seigler: Returns to big leagues

The Red Sox recalled Seigler from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.

He's sliding into the roster spot vacated by the injured Nick Sogard (side). Seigler has had a great season with Worcester, slashing .298/.425/.471 with three home runs, three stolen bases and a 22:19 BB:K over 30 contests. The 26-year-old has split playing time between second and third base with Worcester and could get some reps at those positions with the big club.

  • Red Sox's Nick Sogard: Lands on IL with oblique strain

The Red Sox placed Sogard on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a right oblique strain, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.

It's unclear how long the injury has been bothering Sogard, but he hasn't played since Saturday. Anthony Seigler is grabbing Sogard's spot on Boston's active roster, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa could see steadier playing time while Sogard is out.

  • Red Sox's Caleb Durbin: Extends XBH streak to five games

Durbin went 1-for-3 with a double in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Orioles.

He's still hitting ninth in the order, but Durbin seems to have regained a full-time job at third base thanks to a surge that has seen him produce an extra-base hit in five straight games while batting .350 (7-for-20) with four doubles, a triple, one run and six RBI. If the former Brewer is beginning to learn how to play wall ball off the Green Monster in his new home park, Durbin could still turn around what has been a tough start to his Red Sox tenure.

  • Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Two hits in return

Rafaela went 2-for-4 in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Orioles.

After sitting out Sunday's game due to lower-back soreness and getting Monday's team off day to rest, Rafaela was back in center field Tuesday and looked no worse for wear. Since the beginning of May, Rafaela is slashing .294/.351/.480 over 28 contests with seven doubles, four homers, six steals, 10 runs and 13 RBI.
