Cardinals' Brycen Mautz: Cardinals-Reds postponed Sunday
Mautz and the Cardinals won't face the Reds on Sunday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
The two teams will make up the game as part of a split doubleheader Aug. 17. After being promoted from Triple-A Memphis earlier Sunday, Mautz had been scheduled to start the series finale in Cincinnati in what would have been his MLB debut. As a result of the postponement, the Cardinals won't have a need for a temporary sixth starter, so Mautz could be optioned back to Memphis during the upcoming week.

Cardinals' Brycen Mautz: Recalled ahead of MLB debut
The Cardinals recalled Mautz from Triple-A Memphis ahead of his start against the Reds on Sunday.
St. Louis needed another starter after Saturday's doubleheader against Cincinnati and will turn to the Mautz to make his major-league debut in Sunday's series finale. The 24-year-old southpaw was named the Cardinals' Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2025 after a strong season with Double-A Springfield and has pitched well in Triple-A this season, sporting a 2.90 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 43:24 K:BB across 40.1 innings. Matt Svanson was optioned to Memphis in a corresponding move.

Cardinals' Brycen Mautz: Slated for major-league debut
Mautz will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis to start Sunday against the Reds, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The Cardinals need an extra starter after Saturday's doubleheader, and it will be the lefty Mautz getting the call for his major-league debut. Added to the 40-man roster last November, Mautz has pitched to a 2.90 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 43:24 K:BB over 40.1 innings with Memphis so far. The 2022 second-round pick has allowed more than two earned runs in just one of his nine starts this season.

Cardinals' Brycen Mautz: Dropped from big-league camp
The Cardinals optioned Mautz to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
The Cardinals previously hadn't dismissed the possibility of Mautz making the team as a reliever, but he will begin the season in the rotation at Triple-A Memphis. Mautz posted a 2.98 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 134:33 K:BB over 114.2 innings at Double-A Springfield in 2025.

Cardinals' Brycen Mautz: In mix to fill relief role
Mautz is under consideration for a spot on the Cardinals' Opening Day roster in a relief or hybrid role, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Mautz was added to the 40-man roster this offseason following a breakout year as a starter at Double-A Springfield, where he posted a 2.98 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 134:33 K:BB over 114.2 innings. JoJo Romero is locked into one left-handed bullpen spot for the Cardinals, but he remains a trade candidate, and even if Romero stays put the team likely has at least one other lefty spot up for grabs. Mautz could fill that slot or be used in a hybrid role that would allow him to also make some spot starts. However, the most likely scenario is the southpaw opens the season in the Triple-A Memphis rotation to continue his development as a starting pitcher.

Cardinals' Brycen Mautz: Protected from Rule 5 Draft
The Cardinals selected Mautz's contract from Double-A Springfield on Tuesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Mautz spent all of 2025 at Springfield and turned in his best season yet, finishing with a 2.98 ERA and 1.11 WHIP alongside a 134:33 K:BB over 114.2 innings. The 24-year-old southpaw will be protected from the Rule 5 Draft now that he owns a spot on St. Louis' 40-man roster, and he'll most likely report to Triple-A Memphis to begin the 2026 season.
